WTO Can Act

Greetings Readers

The WTO has taken a lot of criticism in the past year or two. It is pleasing to see that it has made a firm ruling in the case of Korea's limitation by law on the sale of beef at retail.

The importance of competition on an equitable basis of food products has long been blindsided by international agreements. The WTO has long been seen by its critics as an organisation controlled by international corporations self-promoting globalisation as an expediency for market power for the few rather than market opportunity for the many

Perhaps this ruling on Korea indicates that the WTO is a structure that can now be relied on to act to apply the rules of trade in an evenhanded manner. If so NZ farmers will stand to benefit because we can market our products as well as our competitors when the barriers to direct access to consumers are removed.

Good Farming
