Factors depressing the US beef import market 

The fall in Australian returns from the US market continued this week, with the A$ rise pushing the price of imported Australian 90CL beef down 0.8A¢/kg (CIF East Coast), to 281.1A¢/kg, 29% below last year.  The dollar's appreciation offset a 0.5US¢/lb rise in US import price for 90CL FAS. The price of Australian 90CL imported beef has fallen a further 15% since February. The culmination of weak US hamburger demand, high US supplies, and high prices of complementary 50CL product have served to push down the price of Australian imported beef, with the appreciating A$ also contributing to lower returns to Australian exporters….[more]
