Australian Dairy Industry at Odds with WTO CompromiseThursday, Feb 20, 2003
Suggestions that Fonterra was happy with the amended Harbison proposal to the WTO Stuart on proposed amendments to trade rules for dairy products have been qualified by Fonterra CEO who had said he was encouraged by the Harbinson proposals.
But Mr Norgate has later qualified his support, saying the text of the proposal falls well short of his expectations in key areas, but he was particularly pleased to see a specific date for the elimination of export subsidies.
Meanwhile the Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) president Pat Rowley said Australia could not accept the attempt at compromise put forward by Ambassador Harbison.
He said that after being shut out of markets for half a century Australia would not join a compromise that only "opened the gate on a very short chain".
